    The steps

    Four questions

Think of something real from a recent match, then run it through these four questions.

    Start here: what happened?

    1. Is this merely annoying, or is it affecting play?

Be honest. Irritating and interfering are not the same thing.

    2. What kind of issue is it?

      Boundary, rule, fairness, or personality.

Boundary, rule and fairness issues usually need handling. Personality issues usually don’t.

    3. Is this a one-off or a pattern?

One weird moment and a pattern deserve different responses.

    4. Does anything actually need to happen here?

If something needs action, take the action. If it doesn’t, close the case.

    Scripts

    If it needs a response

    Boundary

“Please don’t comment on my game during the match.”

    Rule

“I think the rule is that we replay that point. Want to check?”

    Fairness

“We’re seeing a few of these differently. Can we get a line judge?”

    Pattern

“This is the third time. I need it to stop.”

    Your reset

    Close the case.

    Say it to yourself

I can be right and still move on.

Decide it’s handled, or decide it doesn’t need handling. Either way, the case is closed and you play the next point.

    Take it home

    On the drive home

Answer these in your head, or text them to yourself.

    1. A case I’ve been keeping open that I’m ready to close.

    2. Where my sense of justice tends to take over.
